Mental Performance Coaching: Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers about what mental performance coaching is, what it costs and how it works at Alpha Advantage.

What is a mental performance coach?

A mental performance coach trains the mental skills athletes use to perform under pressure, such as focus, confidence, composure and bouncing back from mistakes. The work is practical: routines, breathing, visualization and game-day plans an athlete practices like any other skill.

What is the difference between a mental performance coach and a sports psychologist?

A sports psychologist is a licensed clinician who can diagnose and treat mental health conditions; a mental performance coach is not, and focuses only on performance. Donnie Gupton is a mental performance coach and certified hypnotherapist. If an athlete is dealing with depression, an eating disorder or anxiety that affects daily life, they should see a licensed professional.

How much does mental performance coaching cost?

At Alpha Advantage, private 90-day coaching starts at $3,500, and there are lower-cost options starting at $47. The book, The Reset course ($47) and the full Alpha Advantage course ($365) let athletes start on their own. A free call is the best way to find the right fit.

How long does it take to see results?

Most athletes notice a difference within the first few weeks, once they start using a pregame routine and a mistake reset. The full Primal Drive Identity OS takes 90 days: 30 days to build, 30 to install and 30 to pressure-proof. Athletes score their confidence, calm and bounce-back speed weekly to track progress.

Does mental coaching actually work for athletes?

Yes, when the athlete practices the routines, not just talks about them. Clients include a Mountain West Conference turnover leader, an All-Conference quarterback and a MAC Freshman of the Year, each of whom credits mental training as part of their results.

What sports do you work with?

Any sport. Most clients play football, and Donnie has also coached soccer players, gymnasts and other athletes. Pressure, confidence and mistakes work the same way in every sport.

What ages do you work with?

High school, college and professional athletes. For athletes under 18, a parent joins the first call. Information for parents.

Are sessions in person or online?

Sessions are held by video call, so athletes can work with Donnie from anywhere.

What is the Primal Drive Identity OS?

The Primal Drive Identity OS is Alpha Advantage’s 90-day mental performance system. It has five parts: a clear vision, a game-day identity the athlete can switch on, control over their nervous system, visualization and hypnosis, and routines for game week.

Is hypnosis safe? Will my athlete lose control?

Yes, it is safe, and no, the athlete stays aware and in control the whole time. Performance hypnosis is focused, guided visualization. It helps big moments feel familiar so the athlete can stay calm in them.
